Director: Bill Maher (debut)
Story: When her boyfriend is sent to jail, Joleen (Theron) has no place to live. So she packs up her daughter Tara (AnnaSophia Robb) and they move in with Joleen’s brother James (Stahl). Then Joleen meets a man and takes off, leaving poor Tara and James to fend for themselves.
PENELOPE
Stars: Christina Ricci, James McAvoy
Director: Mark Palansky (The Same)
Story: Despite the fact that she comes with a handsome dowry, 25-year-old Penelope Wilhern (Ricci) has yet to marry. Largely, that’s because she was born with a pig’s snout in place of her nose — a result of an old curse against her family. The only cure is true love, but no man can stomach the sight of her. That is, until a conman (McAvoy) intending to take advantage of Penelope has second thoughts.
SHUTTER
Stars: Joshua Jackson, Rachael Taylor
Director: Masayuki Ochiai (Kansen)
Story: A newly married couple (Jackson, Taylor) on their honeymoon in Tokyo notice ghostly apparitions developing in their photographs. This latest remake of an Asian horror flick is based on neither a Japanese nor a Korean film, but on a 2004 Thai hit.
